THOMPSON'S BAY
![]()
Heading north from Ballito along the coastal
road is a leisurely drive which will give the traveller some splendid sea views. At
Thompson's Bay you will find Charlie's Pool, an olympic-size tidal pool which was built by
one of the area's early settlers Charles de Charmoy.
There are also secluded beaches, rocky coves and shallow paddling pools which will provide
endless hours of fun. Lifeguards keep a watchful eye on bathers and ensure it is safe to
swim.
South of Thompson's Bay is the Hole in the Wall - a natural rock formation caused by
on-going erosion from the sea.
A marine trail starts from this point and heads north towards High Rock. It is from this
rock that King Shaka's warriors were supposedly called upon to leap from the rock into the
surging waves below to test their courage. This rock is also a favourite fishing spot and
many a great catch have been landed, much to the delight of the fisherman and those
watching.
